Villa de Santiago and Cola de Caballo About 20 miles south of Monterrey, off to the right side of the National Highway, is Villa de Santiago (Saint James Village), a traditional, Mexican colonial-era village. The streets are still narrow, there is a central "plaza" with a fountain in the middle, a classical small-village church right next to the plaza, and some of the streets are even made of cobblestone. Close to Villa de Santiago is Parque Ecoturístico Cola de Caballo (Horse Tail Eco-Tourist Park) where a beautiful 80-ft. Waterfall in a stream coming down from the Eastern Sierra Madre, forming a smooth parabola that resembles a horse’s tail. This is the perfect spot for having a relaxing picnic surrounded by exuberant nature.
Los Cavazos This a traditional and very busy flea market with dozens of shops situated on one side of the road and a host of delicious buffet-style eateries on the opposite side, both sides linked by catwalks above the highway. You can shop for locally made furniture, jewelry, pots, statues, and many other curios things. Los Cavazos (or National Highway Craft Market) is situated just north of Villa de Santiago (Saint James Village) on Carretera Nacional or Highway 85.
El Salto This is a "You Must Visit" place for Nature-Lovers. A 1,100-acre ecological reserve, just over two miles south of Zaragoza, where hills and mountains sorround 'El Salto' (The Jump) and 'Velo de Novia' (Bride's Veil) waterfalls. It's a great spot for mountain climbing, camping, mountain biking, fishing, camping, and other outdoor activities.. There are also cabins for you to rent and spend the night.
Matacanes If adventure is what you are looking for, then Matacanes canyoning is what you need. Because of the variety of its scenery, as well as the physical and mental skill required, Matacanes stands out as one of the favorite and most scenic canyons in the world, according to the American Canyoneering Association. The canyoning experience take place in a small village called Potrero Redondo (Colt's Round Corral) in the Santiago sierras, near to Monterrey city. |
La Huasteca
In this majestic mass of limestone with vertical cliffs you'll
see curious rock formations and mountain crests. As well as
being an ideal site and an exciting challenge for climbers of
all levels, it is also a wonderful place for photographers, due
to its nature. This giant canyon is one of the most spectacular
natural monuments in Mexico. La Huasteca Canyon has Over 180
documented routes; it's an excellent site to learn and practice
rock climbing and rappel techniques; and a wonderful place for
hikers and climbers. Grutas de Garcia Amuse yourself with its natural monuments and explore its impressive rock formations created more than 50 million years ago. Visit Parque Grutas de García (Garcia's Caves Park), only an hour away from downtown Monterrey. Enjoy the panoramic view as you ride the popular cable car all the way to the cave entrance. You can find in the park: picnic areas, gift shop, kids play area and snacks store.
Grutas de Bustamante The Bustamante's Caves are the most beautiful and largest caverns in Mexico's northern region—descending 742 feet below the surface. Because of its rock formations and the size of its caves, these are considered among the most interesting and spectacular caves in the world. Enjoy and learn about the wonders of nature observing stalactites, stalagmites, columns and other formations. Hike up to the caves and walk the tourist paths inside. It has a pleasant outing for all the family and friends with marvelous views.

The third largest city in Mexico, Monterrey is a large business and industrial center and a university town with lively culture and nightlife, hosting a large number of museums and restaurants, some historical attractions and theme parks, contemporary architecture as well as great opportunities for shopping. The surrounding mountains offer outdoor sport facilities from hiking to caving and mountain biking. As one of the wealthiest and safest cities in Mexico, Monterrey is an excellent destination for visitors who want to see the modern and metropolitan side of Mexico.
Monterrey is the the capital of the state of Nuevo León, as well as an important commercial and transportation hub. Also known as the “Northern Sultan”, the city has a large metropolitan area with as many as 3.8 million inhabitants. Founded by the Spanish in 1596 after several unsuccessful attempts, Monterrey remained a small town until the 19th century, when it became an important economic center after Mexico gained its independence. Although the large steel industry that once made the city big is already mainly gone, Monterrey is still the major industrial, commercial and educational center in northern Mexico, attracting a growing number of visitors from around the world.
Monterrey has a subtropical desert climate with hot and humid summers from May to September, and dry, temperate but occasionally chilly winters from December to March. Rainfall is the most common in August and September, while July and August are the hottest months. Spring and autumn, with least extreme temperatures, are good times to visit Monterrey.Public transportation in Monterrey is handled by buses and a two-line subway system. There is a tourist trolley that circulates the downtown area, and riverboats that are good for sightseeing. The common metered taxis and walking are both good choices of getting around. Car rental in Monterrey is also available.
Many educated locals speak also English. Ranked as one of the safest cities in Latin America, Monterrey is a safe place to visit, where taxis can be trusted, pickpocketing is rare, and walking outside at night is not dangerous. You should be just fine here, taking normal precautions as visiting in any other large city.
